Call | “Sound on Screen – Music and Sound in Transmedia Franchises” (Edited Collection)

Call for Chapters (Deadline Extended to 20th December 2024)

Sound on Screen: Music and Sound in Transmedia Franchises

We invite contributions for an edited collection exploring the critical role of sound and music within and across transmedia narratives. As multimedia stories increasingly cross various platforms, it becomes essential to understand how audio elements contribute to world-building, character development, and audience engagement. This volume aims to gather interdisciplinary perspectives that examine the complexities of soundscapes, musical scores, and their transmedial implications.

We welcome chapters addressing a variety of themes, including sonic identity and branding – how sound and music shape a franchise’s identity across different media; musical registers and motifs that analyse recurring musical elements and their meanings within transmedia narratives; and audience engagement, particularly the impact of sound and music on audience perception, participation, and emotional perception. We also encourage submissions focusing on technological advances, examining the role of emerging technologies in the dissemination and evolution of sound across franchises; cultural contexts that influence the use and interpretation of sound and music in global franchises; and fan contributions, which look to fan-created music and sound, including remixes and fan films. Additionally, we seek in-depth case studies that investigate specific franchises and their approaches to sound and music, connecting these analyses to broader theoretical concepts.

In the first instance, proposals should include a working title, a short 200-word chapter abstract, and a brief biography of the author(s). We will communicate acceptance decisions in January 2025. Accepted submissions will then be developed into chapters of between 6,000 and 7,000 words, including references. The timescale of the volume’s production will be communicated in early 2025, but we expect a deadline for full chapter submission to be some time in the spring of 2026.

Please submit your proposals by Friday 20 December 2024 to musicsoundfranchise[at]gmail[dot]com
