Communication and Media Studies – Assistant Professor (Sound Studies)

The School of Communication at Simon Fraser University invites applications for the Glenfraser Endowed Professorship in Sound Studies for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). This is the inaugural appointment for this recently established endowed professorship. Applicants should provide evidence of a coherent research and potential teaching program related to sound studies in such areas as: acoustic communication; acoustic environments; soundscape composition; history and theory of sonic art; interdisciplinary sound studies; audio media heritage; applied research on sound studies; and audio media studies, preferably in conjunction with critical media analysis, cultural studies, and/or communication theory.

Situated in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, the School of Communication is a national and global leader in the discipline. The School is a dynamic site of research and teaching in critical communication studies, and in a range of areas, established and emergent, including: media and culture, technology and society, political economy of global communication, cultural industries and policy, communication policy and industry, digital media and culture, visual culture, history of communication, media production, media literacy, popular culture, applied communication, and more.

The internationally renowned area of sound studies at SFU began almost 50 years ago with the work in environmental sound of the World Soundscape Project, led by R. Murray Schafer. The ongoing development and elaboration of this area of analysis and practice in the School of Communication, and its global prominence and influence, are largely due to the acoustic communication research and electroacoustic composition work by Professor Barry Truax, who along with his partner has established the Glenfraser Endowment.

Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. in communication or a cognate field.
