CFP: Open call for essays – Revista de Arte Sonoro y Cultural AURAL Nº 2

Revista Aural invites writters, artists, architects, philosophers, scientists, researchers or interested parties in general, to send texts to be published in its second issue under the title Geografías Audibles.

In this issue Aural seeks to promote reflection on our soundscape as a dynamic reality that responds to historic and cultural conditions. Ever since the coining of the term ‘soundscape’, the relationship with our acoustic sorroundings in its social, cultural, urbanistic and identitary dimension has been qualitatively problematized. In its turn working with the territory and its audible dimension has become an artistic and multidisciplinar field of research. We ask ourselves, then, about these new practices and its pertinence in our contemporary reality: How are territory and audible experience related? What value do sound cartography works have on a social, artistic and documental level? In what way do we think our cities acoustically? Does the idea of urban sound design have any sense? How does capitalist culture affect the soundscape? Could important part of a given knowledge disappear when audible sorroundings are drastically altered? What consecuences does noise pollution have in our oceans? In what way does it affect the life of communities? How does the acoustic dimension impact an ecosystem? How does it determine us in affective terms?

With this topics as a starting point we invite to reflect critically on the problems associated to soundscape as a multidimensional reality.

In particular, the theme of this issue is influenced by the contingency in our territory, the city of Valparaíso – Chile, where recently a fierce fire devastated various of its hills. In this case, change was abrupt. The conformation of reality of thousands of people was altered from one moment to the other. Thus we make this invitation affected by the radicality of the changes in our inmediate sorroundings, as an concrete example of situations that can in some way modify our relationship with the urban landscape.

The deadline for this open call is on sunday June 15th.
